About This Spot

Stepping into Evergreen Cafe feels like uncovering a well-kept secret nestled along Pittsburgh’s Penn Avenue. It carries the steady heartbeat of a longtime neighborhood dive — unpretentious, slightly weathered, but filled with genuine warmth and character. The rhythm here is unhurried, inviting guests to settle in, whether at the bar or a corner table, soaking in the familiar chatter and the hum of classic skill games.

The air carries the scent of hearty, authentic Mexican flavors, where dishes come alive with bold spice and fresh zest, pairing perfectly with an easy-going line-up of cold beers. It’s the kind of place where the food feels made for you, not just to satisfy hunger but to spark connection — be it through a shared basket of chips and salsa that bite with unexpected heat or the rich layers of a well-loved taco.

Evergreen Cafe’s charm is as much in the company it attracts as in what’s on the plate. The friendly, approachable spirit from the bar blends effortlessly with the hum of regulars and newcomers alike. This is a spot where quick hellos between strangers can turn into extended conversations, and where the owner’s presence makes the place feel less like a business and more like a cherished community hangout.

Here, the small details — like a smoky haze from the classic cigarette machine or a quick nod to the long-standing parking gripes shared with good humor — add texture to the experience, making it uniquely local. It’s a place that doesn’t try too hard, where authenticity lives in every interaction and every bite treats you to a slice of Pittsburgh’s lively and diverse soul.

Had passed this place a few times and it had been closed. Was surprised to see it open on Boxing Day. Was even more surprised by the excellent Mexican food, the best I’d had in PGH and maybe better than most places I’d been in NYC. The owner Phil was genial and welcomed a regular in and talked as I ate at the bar. Beer was cheap and looked good but I was recovering from a cold so I skipped it. Given the quality of the other Mexican food I’d eaten in PGH, I’d say going to this place is a no brainer. They do take out and eat in but no Seamless. The Tinga was tender and flavorful and so was the cotija and house made hot sauce. V fun to discover this hidden gem.

A Pittsburgh staple! The perfect dive bar. Phil is super kind and has a great sense of humor for keeping the parking thing going for 50 years- the determination is admirable. So hilarious how annoyed people get over a parking spot. This bar has lots of character. It’s a true dive. Smoke machine for cigarettes, skill games, cash only, don’t expect fancy $15 cocktails, they have great cold beers on draft- all the classics, the glass is always ice cold which makes all the difference. The food is AMAZING. Try the tacos & the quesadilla!! I was skeptical at first, but found that the food is fantastic. Honestly, some of my favorite Mexican food in the city, and for a reasonable price. Give this place a try. Yinz won’t regret it!

Absolutely fantastic tacos, and the homemade salsa's were great (be warned the spicy one isn't playing). I had the al pastor, the tinga, and the bistec, all were superb. One of my new favorite bars in Pittsburgh

Always wondered what it was like in here and finally made it for lunch recently! The partnered with Taquito’s taco truck for the food and it is delicioso! I tried the loco tacos with the chicken tinga and loaded toppings. Will definitely be back to check out more of the menu.
